3rd Degree

3rd Degree words.

Chapter 10.
'If you MOGULS have a moment,” I called. “It’s Sunday and the markets are closed. We have three dead, a missing baby, and an entire town house burned to the ground in a possible bombing.”
Moguls- A very rich or powerful person.

“Let me tell you what’s doable, Mr. Zinn.” I fastened on his phony, compliant grin. “What’s doable is that we’re back here in two hours with a subpoena, and anything deleted from those files in the past twenty-four hours goes under the heading of impeding a murder investigation. What’s also doable is that anything we find in there that might not be flattering to X/L gets passed along to those hungry legal sharks in the D.A.’s office. Any of that sound doable, Mr. Zinn?”
Doable- Capable of being done.
Subpoena-the usual writ for the summoning of witnesses or the submission of evidence, as records or documents, before a court or other deliberative body.
Impeding-to retard in movement or progress by means of obstacles or hindrances; obstruct; hinder.

“This isn’t just a threat.” I tossed the e-mails back on my desk. “It’s extortion, coercion. You’re a lawyer, Zinn. The reference to his daughter is a blatant threat. You came in here to deal, Mr. Zinn. Here it is: This doesn’t get out. The name on these e-mails stays between us. But we send in our own team to ascertain where they originated from.”

Coercion- the act of coercing; use of force or intimidation to obtain compliance/force or the power to use force in gaining compliance, as by a government or police force.
Blatant-Usage Problem Totally or offensively conspicuous or obtrusive: a blatant lie.
Ascertain-Archaic To make certain, definite, and precise/To discover with certainty, as through examination or experimentation.

Julia was on the floor, listening to the TV, the auburn wig ditched after her assignment last night. There was a news interruption about the murder at the Clift. “Listen.” She turned it up.

Auburn- A reddish-brown or golden-brown color.

About seven, I was back at my desk. My teams scattered all around the area, chasing the leads we had. Cindy had gotten me a copy of this book, Vampire Capitalism. She said it would give me an idea of the new radicalism that was starting to take hold.

Radicalism-the holding or following of radical or extreme views or principles/the principles or practices of radicals.

“Ah, Police Inspector Boxer,” he said. “Please sit, be my guest. Sorry the surroundings are not so plush.” The room was musty and smelled of books and smoke. An ashtray and a pack of unfiltered Rothmans were on the desk.
“Homicide,” Lemouz read, bunching his lips, seemingly impressed. “So I suspect it’s not some rogue etymological nuance that brings you here?”
He sighed. “Yes. Even a man with his nose in his books most of the time brings it out now and then. Tragic. Totally counterproductive. Fanon said, ‘Violence is its own judge and jury.’ Yet, one cannot find it completely surprising.”
Lemouz’s phony sympathy appealed to me about as much as a dentist’s drill. “You mind telling me just what you mean by that, Mr. Lemouz?”

Plush- expensively or showily luxurious.
Musty- having an odor or flavor suggestive of mold, as old buildings, long-closed rooms, or stale food/dull; apathetic
Etymological-the derivation of a word/an account of the history of a particular word or element of a word/the study of historical linguistic change, esp. as manifested in individual words.
Nuance-a subtle difference or distinction in expression, meaning, response, etc./a very slight difference or variation in color or tone.
Counterproductive- thwarting the achievement of an intended goal; tending to defeat one's purpose: Living on credit while trying to save money is counterproductive.
Phony- not real or genuine; fake;false or deceiving; not truthful; concocted.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

Best quotes:

Time was passing like a hand waving in a train that I wanted to be on.

I hope you would think about anything as much as I think about you.

The sensation that hits you when you think you've reached the bottom of a stairs but there's a final step you haven't noticed, and when you take it, the sickening jar goes right through your body.

It makes me incredibly angry that people ll over the world know things that I can't, because it happened here, and happened to me, so shouldn't it be mine?

I would wish I were a poet, I've never confessed that to anyone and I'm confessing it to you, because you've given me reason to feel that I can trust you. Albert Einstein once wrote 'Our situation is the following. We are standing in front of a closed box which cannot be open,' the fragile balance depend on things. We'll never be able to see, hear , smell, or touch. Life itself depends on them. What's real? What isn't real? Maybe those aren't the right questions to be asking.

What does life depend on? I wish I had made things for life to depend on.

Every moment before this one depends on this one.

Everything in history of the world can be proven wrong in one moment.

All the time, every steps she took, she was pushing through some giant clinging web, and recoiled on her, pushing her right back again to where she'd started.

One morning I awoke and understood the hold in the middle of me. I couldn't explain it. The need came before explanations. It was not out of weakness that I made it happen, but it was not out of strength either. It was out of need.

I got tired, not worn out, but worn through. Like one of those wives who wakes up one morning and says I can't bake anymore bread.

My life was music that was always getting louder. Everything moved me. A dog following a stranger. That made me feel so much. A calendar that showed the wrong month. Where the smoke from a chimney ended. How a overturned bottle rested at the edge. I spent my life learning to feel less. Everyday I felt less.

You cannot protect yourself from sadness without protecting yourself from happiness.

My thoughts are wondering. Each day had been chained to the previous one. But the weeks have had wings. I regret to know that it takes a life to learn how to live. Because if I were able to live my life again, I would do things differently. I would change my life.

One hundred years of joy can be erased in one second.

It's hard for anyone even the most pessimistic of pessimistic to spend more than a few minutes in Central Park without feeling that he/she is experiencing something in addition to the present.

We're just missing things we've lost, or hoping for what we want to come. Time was passing like a hand waving in a train that I wanted to be on. I hope you would think about anything as much as I think about you.

Enlighten me (:

♥EllaEnchanted

Good sentences taken from Ella Enchanted, watched the movie, not nice. At least the book is better!

There are two sorts of people in the world: those who blame everyone else and those who know where blame really lies. You stand condemned, Your crime: too much zeal in the protection of those you love. A fault and a virtue. Heinous! Although you've revealed your shortcomings to me, I feel compelled to no such frankness. And, although you've said it goes against the grain, you must find a way to forgive them.

I beg a pardon a thousand time for causing you unhappiness and make reparations a making you laugh a thousand times.

Decisions were a delight after the curse.I loved having the power to say yes or no, and refusing anything was a special pleasure. My contrariness kept him laughing, and his gooness kept me in love.
